The Turn Over phenomena of the waters of the Lake of Tequesquitengo is caused by the reduction of the temperature in the winter; thus, when a colder temperature in the surface of waters is present, it causes that the warms waters of the bottom raise and deoxidize the enviorment, this phenomena causes the masssive death of the fishes.

Many people ignore the phenomenon and they attribute it to an indiscriminate contamination on behalf of the visitors. The sulphurous scent is associated with dirt; nevertheless, this benefits to the lake from February to Apri, and at the end of april, the phenomenon is reverted and the waters become clear, this allows to appreciate good part of the constructions of the sunk town, including the church.
